The act of opening the mouth to its fullest extent so that the entire interior of the mouth can be seen. When the mouth gapes widest the lips also retract to reveal the gums and the buccal (outer) surfaces of the teeth. During the yawning process first inhalation (breathing in) of air and then exhalation (breathing out) of air occur. In most instances the eyes will close as the cat yawns.
